Jodi Rooney Wins Open Seat on Prescott Valley Council
Jodi Rooney was elected by the Prescott Valley Town Council to fill the open seat on Thursday replacing Stephen Marshall who left in 2016. Rooney brings considerable experience in transportation to the council working for the Arizona Department of Transportation since 2010 recently becoming the Local Public Agency Section Manager. The ten-year-resident of Prescott Valley plans to focus on the importance of arts and culture as well as the town’s diverse population.

Dewey Woman Arrested For Aggravated Assault on Police Officer
Prescott Police Department Deputy Chief Amy Bonney released a statement reporting that around 2pm on January 11th, 2017, a police officer from the department was conducting traffic control in the 3200 block of Willow Creek road in a construction zone when a woman, which was later determined to be 45-year-old Heidi Landry of Dewey, began honking her horn for long periods of time and yelling out the window. Once the officer released traffic for northbound travel, the officer attempted to talk with Landry about her behavior when the woman disobeyed and drove off while the officer was trying to open the door, the release stated. The officer was dragged for several feet before finally becoming free, according to the release. The officer received minor injuries and Landry’s vehicle was later located where officers proceeded to arrest the woman and booked her into the Yavapai County Sheriffs Office for aggravated assault, endangerment and refusing to comply with a lawful order from an officer, the release stated.

Humboldt Elementary Teacher Wins $5,000 Grant For New Speaker System
Maureen Holt has taught for the Humboldt Unified School district for the last 25 years and is a huge football fan. Holt was scrolling on Facebook one day when she came across a chance to win free tickets for the Fiesta Bowl from the event’s official page. Having never gone to a bowl game before, she decided to give it a try and once Holt checked out the website, she saw a “Wishes for Teachers” link. Holt discovered the link was a contest for a $5,000 dollar grant from the Fiesta Bowl to either help the school or a teacher’s classroom. She decided to throw her hat in the ring and won a grant Bowl which will allow the school afford a brand new sound system for the over 50-year-old gymnasium.

Prescott Valley Police Joins with MATFORCE for Family Fun Walk
Prescott Valley Police Department Public Information Officer Jerry Fergunson announced the department would be joining up with MATFORCE in the upcoming One Mile-Family Walk in Dewey at 10 AM on Saturday January 28th at Mortimer Family Farms on 12907 State Route 169. The release stated, no registration is required for the free family event that will include several children’s activities. The event is a culmination of the “Stand with me be Drug Free” celebration between January 23rd and 28th, according to the release.

Free Admission to National Parks on Martin Luther King Day
Being that today is Martin Luther King Day, all national parks are offering free admission. Martin Luther King Day is one of just ten days where admission is free this includes the Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Casa Grand Ruins. However, while the parks will be open and free of charge, the Prescott National Forrest Offices will be closed.

Northern Arizona Suns
After losing nine straight games, the Northern Arizona Suns jumped back by winning two straight last week culminating with a 121-90 victory over the Grand Rapids Drive in front of nearly 2500 fans at the Prescott Valley Event Center. Next up is the D-League Showcase for the Northern Arizona Suns as the team takes on the Oklahoma City Blue on Wednesday and the Austin Spurs on Friday before heading out on the road for two more. NAZ Suns don’t return home to the Prescott Valley Event Center until February 1st for a 6:30 pm matchup against the Salt Lake City Stars.
